Home to serene nature escapes, and some of the best eateries on the Island, Cordillera Central of Borikén (Puerto Rico) is the perfect getaway destination for thrill and restoration. A cordillera is a chain of mountain ranges stretching from one side of the island to the other. Natural rivers, waterfalls, and caves are hidden throughout the various subranges of the Cordillera Central. If you enjoy the test of hiking in wet terrain, visit these enchanting wonders of Cordillera Central on your next adventure to Puerto Rico.
Cascada Gozalandia, SAN SEBASTIÁN
Of all the waterfalls I've traveled to with groups, Casacada Gozalandia, or as the locals refer to it, Gozanlandia has been a fan favorite - offering easily accessible cascades in San Sebastián's forest. The development encompasses a large parking area, a main and upper waterfall, and Sha's, a creole restaurant offering picadas, and other local favorites. This forest is a treat for all wanderers and a true wonderland.
Getting There
San Sebastián is a 40-minute drive from BQN. Upon entering Casacada Gozalandia is a vast parking area where you will immediately encounter Sha's and restrooms. The parking fee is under $10. To arrive at the main waterfall, you will walk about 5 minutes down a wooden path with a few stairs where you will meet the riverbank. The upper waterfall consisting of a smaller waterfall and rope swing is about a quarter of a mile from the entry point.
Cueva Jagüey, CABO ROJO
Traveling to Puerto Rico and only visiting San Juan, is not actually visiting Puerto Rico. The west of the island is where real paradise exists. As a teenager, I would save up all the cash gifted from birthdays or Christmas and use it to book a flight to the homeland to visit my favorite beach, Playuela or Playa Suica in Cabo Rojo. After a long and challenging school year, I would visit my cousins and spend our days drinking cold Gasolinas, dancing in the sand, and swimming in the sea. If you don't think heaven exists on Earth, you clearly haven't traveled to Cabo Rojo. I did not believe Puerto Rico could continue to take my breath away but, this cave left me speechless.
Getting There
This one took me a while to figure out. Near Faro Los Morillos, you will find a path to this area of the dry forest. The easiest way down is by walking towards the outset of the cave. You will find an almost starlike dirt path, allowing you to track down the rock formation onto lower ranges.
Cueva Del Arco, UTUADO
Utuado is one of my favorite towns to explore on the island where nature and serenity are abundant. There are two caves located in this area with contrasting formations. After tiring yourself out from the challenging hike down, Cueva Del Arco, is the perfect destination to sit, relax, and meditate to the sound of the slow, rumbling water.
Getting There
I wouldn't have arrived at this destination without the help of a local living near the trailhead. This trailhead is unmarked and the trail is strenuous and humbling. The trailhead is located where the dead-end road meets the forest. The hike to the river was about 45 minutes. While the trek is narrow and slippery but, I promise it is surmountable. Once arriving at the river, heed right to find the striking arc-shaped cave. Trust me, this destination is worth the sweat!
